To Professor Dr. Berner, Director of the Royal Family-Archives, I am most particularly indebted, and also to Professor Seidel, Director of the Hohenzollern Museum, for so kindly permitting me to reproduce several portraits, some of which have not been previously published. On the subject of the English Double Marriage I have adopted the view of Oncken and Berneck, founded upon recent investigations in the London and Vienna archives of documents unknown to, or, at least, unused by, the older Prussian historians, Raumer, Ranke, and by Carlyle, a view which my own further researches in our State Paper Office appear to me to justify. My apology for leaving the French poetry in the original must be that I hold French poetry to be untranslatable into English verse.
